Cigar Review: Avowed Awakening Limited Edition Gran Robusto

Small Batch Cigar

Avowed Cigars might be a new cigar brand, but the folks behind the brand are not. Andrew Considine and Dave West should sound familiar to our audience, as they are behind Maxamar Ultimate Cigars and Small Batch Cigar. To be clear, Avowed Cigars is not owned by the store, nor is this just a house blend. This is a cigar brand that launched with 2 core lines and a limited edition. You’ll also recognize Klaas Kelner’s name…or, at least you should. With the brand coming out of the Kelner Cigars SAS factory, they immediately have gravitas behind them.

What makes the Awakening (Avowed’s LE) special is the use of an Ecuadorian Hybrid wrapper. According to halfwheel.com it’s referred to as “Capa Marron.” The article goes on to say that the wrapper has not been grown for over a decade and only 4 bales of the wrapper were purchased. When I talked with Dave West about the launch of Avowed and asked about the hybrid wrapper, he told me, “When it’s gone. It’s gone.”

BAND DESIGN

The Awakening features a double band that is red with white, gold and a dark red? I’d call it burgundy, but I’m sure it’s darker than that. Regardless of the accent, the double band is elegant. The Avowed logo is prominently displayed in white on the primary band, while the name of the cigar “Awakening,” is in gold on the secondary band. It is striking and will be easily spotted in a humidor. The box for Awakening is striking, too. Black with gold accents. The entire presentation is one of elegance and luxury.

PRE-LIGHT OBSERVATIONS

CONSTRUCTION

The “Cappa Marron” wrapper is a gorgeous shade of brown, just on the lighter side of milk chocolate. The wrapper is smooth to the touch and has a nice oily sheen to it. There are few veins. The foot of one of the cigars smoked for this review, appears to be a bit darker than the rest of the cigar. The Awakening is a beautiful cigar that appears to have been rolled with care and attention.

AROMA

The wrapper gives off notes of bread, cedar, and a funky barnyard. Honestly, it makes my mouth water. The foot reveals notes of barnyard, cereal, fruit, and sweet tobacco. The profile reminds me of a famous cereal featuring more than one scoop of raisins.

COLD DRAW

The cold draw reveals notes of sweetened cereal, honey, a light dusting of baking spices, fruit, and a bit of earth. There might be a subtle coffee note coming through. The draw itself offers the perfect amount of resistance.

SMOKING EXPERIENCE

LIGHT & DRAW
Cut: Le Petit by Les Fines Lames
Fire: Vector’s ICON III

I immediately notice rich and chewy notes of chocolate and fruit. There is a definite bread or cereal note coming through, too. Baking spices, caramel, nuts, earth, and coffee come through, as well. Black pepper on the retrohale. There is a fruitiness that lingers on the palate.

SMOKE

The first thing I notice is the aroma of the smoke. I love the smell of the Awakening. The smoke is thick, creamy, and almost chewy. The smoke coats my palate with each draw. It is almost blue in the light.

FIRST THIRD
>> Fruit, Coffee, Cereal, Black Pepper

As the initial light fades, the first third begins to make itself known. Notes of wood, caramel, baking spices are easily detected. The fruit that lingered on my palate during the initial light seems all but gone, only to reappear on the front of my tongue. Coffee, nuts, fruit, and wood. Black pepper rules the retrohale, but it is not overpowering. In fact, while the baking spices meld well with the dark fruit note, the pepper seems very subdued. Bread, honey, fruit, and earth. The burn line is almost razor sharp (though did become wavy on two of the three cigars smoked…it always self-corrected to razor sharp). The ash is compact, with not a flake in sight. Grey with black streaks. It is burning beautifully. I love this fruit and honey combination. It is, quite literally, mouth watering. There is a sourness from the bread/cereal note that compliments the sweetness. The Awakening begins with a smooth flavor profile and is medium in strength. The fruit note ebbs and flows with the wood, coffee, bread, and nutty notes. Dark roasted coffee, salted nuts, and a hint of caramel join the chorus. The construction of The Awakening continues to impress. The burn line is sharp with a barrel ash. There are a few flakes, but that happens when you see how long you can let the ash get.

SECOND THIRD
>> Avocado Oil, Earth, Baking Spices, White Pepper

The middle third of the Awakening is heralded by a citrus note. Avocado oil, espresso, wood, earth, and baking spices. Cayenne pepper scratches at the back of my throat. Graham cracker and fruit linger on my palate. White pepper on the retrohale now. The burn is a bit wavy, but nothing concerning, and the ash only flakey where I deposited it. The profile is definitely in the medium+ range now. The spice from the pepper adds complexity and balance to the sweetness of the Awakening. Wood and citrus are the dominant flavors, followed by baking spices and pepper. Leather, rich chocolate, and a bitterness that I can’t quite place begin to come through. Citrus cuts through the richness of the middle third.

FINAL THIRD
>> Citrus, Sweet Cream, Leather, Black Pepper

The final third of the Awakening begins with a “brightness” that was not in either of the first two thirds. Rich chocolate remains, as does the baking spices. Charred wood fades into the background. Cream, almonds, earth, leather, and chocolate all come together. Fruit lurks in the undercurrent. The burn line is still magnificent and the ash is almost perfect. Salted butter, coffee, a hint of wood, and black pepper on the retrohale. The final third of the Awakening is firmly in the medium+ category. There is still a sweetness that rounds out the profile and keeps it smooth. Chocolate lingers on my palate, with just a hint of pepper. Citrus subtly hangs in the background.

RATING & FINAL THOUGHTS

FLAVOR PROGRESSION

The Awakening starts with notes of wood, fruit, baking spices, and coffee but it somehow felt like it was holding back. It wasn’t until the final two thirds when the Awakening comes to life. The sweetness of the chocolate and fruit is flanked by cayenne pepper, honey, and citrus. The flavors always complimented one another and nothing felt out of place. My only real complaint is that the first third is more mild to medium compared to the last two thirds. It ramps up nicely in both flavor and strength.

BURN EXPERIENCE

I have nothing to write here. Seriously. The burn was almost flawless. Each time I would look at it, I was amazed. Was it razor sharp the entire way through? No. Did it always correct itself. Every. Time.

COMPLIMENTS & CRITIQUES

AWAKEN YOUR SENSES.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Awakening each time I smoked it. New cigar manufacturers can sometimes suffer from not having enough experience. Luckily, Andrew and Dave have been around the industry long enough to know who to turn to. Klass Kelner and the entire Avowed team have hit on something special with the Awakening. From the hybrid wrapper to the presentation, Awakening delivers an outstanding experience. I would have preferred a bit more in the first third, but that’s really my only complaint. The Awakening will open your eyes to the potential that the Avowed brand has.

SIMPLY STOGIES RATING:  9.37 / 10.0
